For staking claims you need plastic PVC “sewer” pipe. It has predrilled holes which makes it easier to bundle.
You should also get sample bags, magic markers, topo lines (for surveying). A rich ore zone will have 5 hundredths of an ounce of gold per ton of ore. The gold itself is microscopic–you won’t see it except in the flame of an atomic absorption machine. I am assuming you will simply take your samples to be assayed–there are lots of labs in Nevada that will do this for you at a reasonable cost.

My first step would be to find out what mining claims were there and still active. You can get yourself shot messing on a mining claim–sometimes walking thru will trigger an attack. As for tools, snake bite kit, rock hammer, gold pan, wet suit, bug spray,,dredging equipment and a 6 pack and some good food, a tent and a weapon. Good gloves and a squirrel tail to gather fine gold with–a spendy metal detector would also help. Have a fun summer. Many states you have to buy a dredging permit.
