Bounty Hunter makes a good entry level detector for any age. If your son really decides he likes treasure hunting, you will find many different brands and models to choose from, some in the thousands of dollars. Just stay away from the cheap radio shack ones, they are overpriced junk.
Make sure to get one that is “discriminating”. It will give him experience with a basic detector setting that is on all better units. Automatic ground balancing is nice but not necessary.
