Can handheld treasure type metal detectors find underground copper water pipes?

Hi Answers crew. I want to know if the handheld type of metal detectors used to find coins, jewelry, and watches can effectively find a 3/4 inch copper water line buried in my front yard suppling water approximately 18 inches below some fairly rocky soil.
If I can locate the pipe I can avoid spending $325 for a leak locater service.
If this is possible can these be rented?
Thanks in advance.

  1. yes, but i doubt if you can rent one. you can probably buy one for 50 bucks on line or at a pawn shop.

    then , yeah it works

  2. Yes the newest modern metal detectors have controls that will allow you to pick the type of metal you want to detect. And also how deep you want it to check for that metal. You can set them for iron, gold, silver, copper or lead. You can even tell them what metals to ignore such as aluminum. They are very sophisticated now.

  3. YES.They can help you locate underground Copper lines. I have both a White’s Electronics’s and a Garrett Metal Detector and both can be adjusted easily to find underground copper lines. They can easily detect lines up to 20″ deep, even in rocky soil as long as there are no high mineral deposits in the area to be scanned. I would think a leak would be pretty easy to find once you find an area that the soil is wet along the copper line

I really don’t have a clue where you could rent one. You might check in your area for Metal detecting clubs and see if you could get a member to come to your home and help you out. It would be a whole lot Cheaper to give a guy $20 to help you from a local club than spend $325 for a leak location service…
