I just got into looking for gold and there are a lot of milky quartz rocks around where I live in piedmont nc. I heard that sometimes small amounts of gold may be found inside quartz rocks. Will it set off my metal detector if there is gold inside? Anybody else tried this? Thanks
Yes. a properly adjusted detector will find the denser gold in
quartz.
a couple things to note:
these areas are highly mineralized areas ,and ground balance is important to maintain sensitivity.
run your detector ‘sensitive’,but not to the point of instability.
go as slow as you can and still get ‘good’ detection.
just got a new DFX300

If there is gold, It should. I’ve never heard of Gold in Quartz. But I really don’t know much about Geology. although, wouldn’t an Amethyst set off your detector because of the iron in the quartz that turns it purple?

It’s true that gold is found in quartz veins in rocks. In areas of high tectonic activity and hydraulic flow, quartz and gold can precipitate inside rocks.
You might be able to detect some gold if you look hard enough, depending on where you are located.

Gold will not grow inside quartz, instead gold can be found AROUND quartz veins. It is to do with hydrothermal waters carrying dissolved gold around and into areas of weaker or already differed rock – in this case a quartz vein. As the water cools the gold preciptates, forming the gold deposits. Common in Australia.
