Can a compass detect metal with its magnets?

I’m writing a fictional story and I was wondering if it were possible for a compass used in camping to be able to pick up on metal — as in gold or silver. Is there any chance its magnets would be drawn to it in any way? If so, how is this possible?
Thanks guys!

OK, so in the story, the characters THINK they are tracking down bags of drugs. They are really looking for bags on white powder of gold that has been crushed. It was crushed in Canada and placed into empty bags of grain to avoid detection while crossing the border into Alaska (the setting of the story). This gold constitutes one end of the drug deal — the buyers.

In each bag the characters find, there is a cyanide solution that returns the gold to a solid state once again. First off, is this possible because I read it was — unless I misinterpreted.

Also, could the bags maybe have pieces of lodestone in them to help detection? They aren’t all buried underground…
