Sorry this question is vague, if I had more details I wouldn’t even have to ask for help. The only thing I really have to give as clues is the basic plot (which is very standard stuff) and a link to the screenshot of a different game that reminded me of the one I used to play. Look for the third image from the top. That’s the one that piqued my memory. The basic plot is:
You’re an adventuresome guy looking for some treasure, you start off by deciding a few stats for your character then you get stuck in a small town. The view is bird’s eye with 2d graphics. You have an inventory, as well as a weapon/armor equipment selection similar to World of Warcraft (you can wear 2 rings and find items that have special magic bonuses). From the town you go off and explore different dungeons (the game is old enough to have a grid of squares map/movement options), fight bad guys (goblins with clubs, rats, scorpions, among others), and loot stuff. After you explore a couple you come back to the village to find out that it’s been burnt down! So you go on a quest of revenge and you get to go to a new area and fight some more bigger, badder baddies.
If anyone could toss out some possible games that seem to fit the above guideline, I would really appreciate it! The denied nostalgia is driving me crazy!
