What are some great “treasure hunt” themes for kids to go hiking?

I have a *small* list worked up of different things to look for when out in the woods … hiking trails …. creek … pastures ….

Any good resources / ideas to keep kids interested and involved in nature? We have a place to hike (state park) – just need ideas of things to look for …. in the Southeastern PA region ….
3 kids – 2 boys (ages 10 and 8) and 1 girl (age 6)

They LOVE to hike but I’m trying to involve them in learning about our local natural resources and conservation too – in a fun way … different tree species, rock types, find as many different kinds of seed pods as you can …shells by the creek, etc. etc.
I’ve been taking them hiking since they were tiny tots … we are all very “outdoorsy” — haha .. know about local flora and fauna to stay away from and how to treat the trail respectably — just need som fun activities to get the kids to learn about our local resources…
Note – this is not like a birthday party thing — this is genuine land conservancy and awareness stuff. I volunteer to maintain 7 miles of hiking trail at a local state park and I ‘m looking to get my kids involved in respecting and understanding nature — the signs of erosion thing is a GREAT idea!!

what are the powers that are performed only by our national government, the ones only performed by our state governments and maybe a couple which are performed by both. That’s federalism!

What should i add to my 100 list of things to do this summer?

Okay this is my list… But i need 55. more and i need to finish this in 2 weeks (when school is over) im in 8th grade and next year will be in 9th grade, anyways heres my list, do you like it? what else should i add

Bike Ride any direction, see where you go
Read 20 books
Go swimming
Rollerblade with a friend or two
Dance for 2 hours straight
Buy a magazine and read it out side
Get a beautiful tan
Commit random acts of kindness

Examples:
Print up some inspiring signs and post them around town.
Drop Pennys on the ground (or bigger coins) gives people luck.
Smile at a stranger

9. Go on a walk
10. Tone up your muscles
11. Chalk your drive way really pretty
12. Paint a picture… With your fingers
13. Pick flowers
14. Make a summer CD
15. Spend a day taking pictures
