Of the known chemical elements, those with the highest atomic numbers (above 100) are made through the high speed collision of the atoms and ions of lighter elements in particle accelerators. Unfortunately, it is hard to detect the formation of new elements because, at these high atomic numbers, the atoms that are formed are highly radioactive and very short lived. However, it has long been believed that somewhere above atomic number 110 there is an ‘island of stability’ where the atoms of the elements are likely to have longer life times. This question is concerned with the element temporarily named ‘conundrun’, symbol Cn. Observations of nuclei of conundrum have been reported and each contained 119 protons. Some nuclei contained 178 neutrons and some contained 179 neutrons.
