Do you think school uniforms should be compulsory? I am not referring to “dress codes” that are common in many U.S. schools (with rules such as no ripped jeans), but the type of regimented uniforms that are common in Britain. I’m not sure what I think of the whole matter. – The argument for school uniforms usually states that children would pick on their peers whose parents don’t have the money to kit their kids out in the latest fashion. I can well see how this would happen, and it seems an awful prospect. Nevertheless, having done my schooling in South Africa, I well remember how uncomfortable school uniforms were, and how awful it was to have to wear blazers in sweltering weather. I also remember all the other annoying rules like, “the face of a watch may not be bigger than an R2 (two rand) coin. The strap must be gold, silver or black leather (girls), or black leather (boys), the strap may not be wider than 1cm (girls), and 1.5cm (cm) boys. Digital watches are not allowed, and all pupils are expected to wear analogue watches, during school hours, and whilst in pupil. An exception is made at sports practices and/or matches. In these instances, pupils are permitted to wear digital watches… The strap must be black, blah, blah blah”
