What would be the best way to make a treasure map?

I am planning a boating trip with several kids this summer and I am wondering how I could make a good treasure map and treasure box for ten year old kids?
My plan is to bury the treasure ahead of time and then give the kids the map and tell them to find the treasure and they have to jump off boat and swim ashore.
Much like I seen in a movie years ago call White Squall,, which is probably the best boating movie ever.
Thank you for your help!

Get really nice parchment from a craft store and stain it with tea. burn the edges a little.

Get a nice ink pen to draw the map. (the kind you fill yourself)

Try to come up with riddles to the next spot too. That would be fun.

  2. pick a starting point (Identifiable feature) and an ending point (identifiable feature) give some clues. Wet a tea bag wipe it on the paper and burn the edges a bit

Find an old piece of parchment paper, draw a rough outline of the area and write down archaic clues to the location i.e. “Take twenty paces from the jagged rock”. Don’t make it too easy or they may be a little upset.

  4. this sounds like fun! i can tell you that a “lock n lock” from walmart is the perfect container. it is in the food storage area and has an o-ring so it is waterproof.
i don’t have any other ideas but i play a game which is great for kids called geocaching. go to geocaching.com for more info. fun for the whole family, and it is played all over the world.

Be sure to get a GPS fix in case you lose sight of the place you put it! The old maps normally would have land marks and then so many paces from that. Use classic antique paper that you can get at Office Depot. Water stain the paper after you draw the map using a pencil or real fountain pen for effect.

  6. You can also tear the edges of the paper, removing a small rough section around the perimeter. Then dab a little lemon juice on the edges and hold it above a stove burner or candle to heat it, but not close enough to allow it to burn. The lemon juice will brown up nicely and the torn edges will look burnt. That way you won’t stink up the house.

  7. start where you bury the treasure and work backwards from there,,also bury clues that add to the map, like missing pieces,, or soft drinks in a can
